Last week we saw the return of Miranda to the runway for Balenciaga’s Resort 2012 collection.

Creative director Nicolas Ghesquiere is known for producing unique shows that resonate with his fondness for colour and architectural aesthetics, and his resort 2012 collection was no different. As Ghesquiere put it the “longer than usual, and with more volume,” collection had an assortment of voluminous pieces in opulent fabrics. The sculptured garments depicted the fun and risk-taking attitude of Ghesquiere and stood out from the rest of the resort shows. Balenciaga usually shows a trouser-heavy collection, however last week we saw an array of shorts and skirts in the collection.

Volume was a key influence in the collection with voluminous balloon skirts and voluptuous double shorts, which were inspired by the famous Balenciaga client Mona von Bismarck’s gardening shorts, paired with crisp white shirts. The A-line skirts that were pleated ever so softly falling perfectly at the knee were the standout item of the collection as were the printed dresses and jackets. Trousers also made an appearance and were tapered in a stunning palette of metallic hues, adding a splash of glamour needed for resort wear. There was also a reference to sophisticated chic dressing with cardigans layered over dresses, which Ghesquiere said was “in classic Jackie Kennedy style”. The men’s inspired garments were complemented by oversized and cropped sleek jackets and sculptured vests.

The stunning autumn colour spectrum of plum, red and brown and metallic gold, rust and silver were orchestrated beautifully with the distinctive brick print used by Cristobal Balenciaga in 1961. The tones were accompanied perfectly with the various fabrics including silk, chiffon, tweed and leather.

Thigh high boots and sculpted heels were the shoes of choice, while the retro 80s-style visor combined with most of the outfits added a touch of sport luxe to the collection. The long sleek straight hair and chunky jewellery donned by the models supplemented the innovative collection.

Miranda strutted down the runway in numerous outfits from the standout collection including the delicate silk double shorts with an oversized white A-line jacket and the silver knee-length skirt with a white tunic-style shirt.

The overall look was luscious and fun, reflecting Balenciaga’s original concepts. With Miranda’s relaxed and happy persona it is easy to see why she has modelled for Balenciaga season after season.
